The brighter in color, the higher level of antioxidant the fruit contains. Vitamin A is needed for healthy skin and vitamin C keeps gums and tissue healthy.

Buy fruits in season to get the best buys without added sugar, fat, or salt. If not in season, choose dried, frozen or canned fruits, but go easy on fruit juices as they lack the fiber found in whole fruits.

This group contains foods made from milk such as cheese and yogurt that are considered the best natural sources of calcium. There are also foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter—they are not part of this food group. Calcium is needed to keep bones and teeth healthy.

Many people get less calcium than they need. If you are lactose-intolerant, choose lactose-free products. Or if you cannot drink milk, choose foods from other food groups that are fortified with calcium to meet your nutrient needs.

Check labels on cereals and juices to choose those with high amounts of calcium. To make your food dollars count, choose less expensive forms of milk, yogurt and cheese. The healthier versions are the low or nonfat types.

Drink fat-free milk at meals; put it on cereal and use in cooking. Some products, such as ice milk, may have little fat but will add calories to your diet because of the sugar that they contain.

Enjoy these foods, but in smaller portions. Foods included in this group are meats, poultry, fish, dry beans, dry peas, soybeans, lentils, eggs, nuts, and peanut butter.

These foods not only provide protein, but are also sources of vitamins and minerals. Iron is an important nutrient found in this food group.

Your meat and poultry choices should be low-fat or lean. Choose cooking methods such as broiling, baking, or grilling to reducing adding fat to your meal.

Plant sources such as nuts, seeds, and beans contain healthy sources of fats and are less expensive than other choices from this food group. Eggs have very good quality protein and are low in cost.

Have most of the fat in your diet come from fish, nuts, and vegetable oils such as canola, olive, soybean, corn, safflower, and sunflower oil.

Examples of food items that contain oils include mayonnaise, certain salad dressings, and soft tub or squeeze margarine with no trans fat.

Solid fats include butter, shortening, stick margarine, lard, and meat fats and are not part of the oils category. Sugar has many names: syrup, molasses, and honey are some of them. Candy, jam, jelly, and many soft drinks are mostly sugar, too. Sugars are high in calories and low in nutrients.

Limit them in your menu plan. Much of the salt in our diets is added to foods during cooking and at the table. Try using less table salt and eating fewer salty foods.

Many of these foods have salt in them:. Not everyone loves to cook. Even those who enjoy cooking do not always have the time or the energy.

Buying convenience foods or eating out can be costly. But there are ways to eat well at low cost without spending hours in the kitchen. Again, planning ahead will help you. Consider these ideas:.

I already am amazed at how much food our small family goes through. Granted, our kids have big appetites…but still! When you say lettuce salad, what is that?

Just chopped lettuce and dressing, without other veggies? Linsey, thanks for asking! Unless I specify the dressing, we just use whatever bought dressing we have on hand right then. I used to type out what ingredients I used each time, but it got cumbersome and as life got busier I found it harder to take the time to jot down every single salad ingredient in my planner.

It's easier to compare prices from home and you can easily subtract items from your list until you're comfortable with the total amount. Of course one of the best ways to stick to your frugal meal planning goals is to actually use all of the food you buy.

There are two keys to success for this one. The first is meal prep. There's nothing sadder than buying a bunch of beautiful produce, having a busy week, and watching it all go bad in your fridge.

If you do at least a minimal amount of meal prep, like washing and chopping produce, at the beginning of the week, you're so much more likely to eat the food you buy.

Another key way to avoid wasted food is to incorporate all of an ingredient in your meal plan. For example, if you plan to top a stir fry with green onions, make sure you have a plan for the rest of the bunch so they don't go bad.

This article has some great tips on how to do this. Incorporating one or more vegetarian recipes into your weekly frugal meal plan is a great way to cut costs.

I am actually a new blogger and just got my site up and going a few weeks ago. We save so much by meal planning. We do things in a different order. I buy meat that is on sale and freeze a lot of it and then I meal plan for the whole month based on what is in the freezer.

This leaves me free to continue to stock up on meat when I find it at the rock bottom prices. I bought 12 chickens last month, roasted them all in the overn 6 at a time since that was what fit and then removed the cooked meat and froze it.

It makes dinner prep so fast too when the meats already cooked. I just have to reheat and make some sides and we are good to go.

By the time they were done eating, there wasn't anything left for my husband and me. Thankfully, this recipe was fast, so it didn't take long to get us fed too! This also helped finalize the clear-out of the fridge before we did our grocery haul again over the weekend.

Normally on Saturday, I would prepare for the upcoming week, but because we were traveling, I saved it for Sunday. But despite different needs, I feel that meal planning can help simplify and benefit everyone in some capacity — and I hope that sharing mine here is able to help in some small way.

Whenever I make something that calls for bacon inside of it, I put the bacon into my food processor to give it a quick chop. This method makes it easier for my kids to eat without having to try and bite off a large piece with each bite.

These were a HIT. The marinade had a Greek yogurt base and only needed a few extra add-ins: yogurt, lemon juice, olive oil, and spices.

Once the marinade was mixed together, I added it into a Ziploc bag with chicken thighs and let everything sit in the fridge. I also had my kitchen helper using a more ~abstract~ technique to assemble the crackers. Onward to lunch.

For the the kids, it was turkey sandwiches again — this time served with strawberries, cucumbers, and hummus. For me, leftover stuffed shells. For plating, my husband and I assembled our bowls and added salsa. The kids kept theirs basic with some rice and cheese. Try it!
